Where There’s Smoke

Terra Little

The author’s purpose in writing this book is to entertain readers on the trouble things that’s happening in today’s world. Also to show the relationship between a father and son even though they just met one another. She’s showing how a having both parents in your life can turn you into a positive person no matter where your growing up and where you come from. But what you “bring to the table.”

Rate – 10

I think the intended audience for this book will be people who can understand what’s happening.

The son changed throughout this book because in the beginning he was a troubled teenager who did drugs and drink alcohol. He was failing school and disrespected his mother. All of a sudden his father comes in his life , not knowing that he had a son. He tries to be there for his son and show’s him what not to do because doing the wrong things and hanging around the wrong people can mess your life up. Towards the end of the book his son is now doing well in school. Helping his mother around house and making a new group on friends. He then feels lucky to have a father in his life and tells himself that he’s gonna do the same for his kids someday.

Skills based on my Strengths ..

Jamal S.

Ms. Rami – 10-11

Having the ability to work in teams with people different from me is new. The first time i had the chance to do this was in high school. I met new people, with different cultures, that i knew nothing about. But given the quality to work with different people made me interest more into team work. Being able to step up and give ideas one by one made a project success. In order to be a team we had to set out on who was doing what, and how they were going to do it. An example of working as a team is when a few of classmates and i had to make a video/sketch on Romeo and Juliet. We had to write a good script. Also, we had to figure out who was going to hold the camera and direct the movie. This is what it’s like having the ability to work in a team.

Having the ability to write and speak well is an amazing gift. I believe these two adjectives describes me best. Speaking and writing well enables me to express myself accurately, helping me get my point across a situation. An example of having the ability to write well is when i had to write an autobiography. Ax example of myself speaking well was when i had to take an interview for school. I had to speak clearly, manageable, and respectful.

Analyzing a problem to develop workable solutions to me is getting an understanding and developing a plan to resolve it. Using this method helps me the best in life, anywhere and everywhere i go.  I feel as if these are skills you learn how to deal with at different levels based upon your age and knowledge. An example of this would be in my everyday life in school. In math when learning something new you have to work your way around a problem in order to develop the situation.

I would like to gain skills in the ability to apply knowledge and skills in new settings.  I would like to gain skills is in this because i think this is something I’m going to need all the way through college. Also through jobs. Learning this skill now is going to help me a lot in the future, that’s why it’s best to start now. That’s also why i want to gain focus into this skill.

ABC’s Poem

The letter “B”

The letter “B”,

The first letter of my grandma’s middle name.

Shows the wings of a butterfly,

Can see the spooky eyes of a ghost,

Also have a double rainbow

With two doors at most.

Represents a double “D”

Or even a big cheesy face

Without a letter “B” there would be no “base.”

My Personal Experience

My personal experience…

“This is it!” I’m thinking this as the big day approaches. I’m feeling very confident and proud. I iron and lay my clothes out thinking how my life is going to change, how new beginnings will be starting and better opportunities will be coming for me. Before the night ends, i pray that the next day will be a good and life changing day. The day is finally here. It’s one of the biggest days of my life. Today is September 7, 2010 and it’s my first day of high school. I get out the bed and get my self situated for the first day back to school. One hour passes and now I’m ready for my first day of high school. Before my mom and I leave the house she tells me to eat a meal so that I’m full and energized for my big day.

While we’re in the car my mom tells me to relax and smile. At this point she’s trying to calm me down because I’m very nervous. As we pull up to the school, I ask my mom was she going to walk me in. She said, “NO!” This made me even more nervous, but i could understand why she said no because this isn’t middle school. It’s high school, meaning that I am now a young adult who has to take on responsibilities. As i walk into the school i could feel my heart beating fast and hard. “BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM!” My heart rate increasing every minute.

I walked up to the front desk to get my I.D and scanned it. Next I walked into the cafeteria where every one else was going. When I got into the cafeteria I could feel every ones eye’s staring at me as if they were lions and I were their prey. It seemed as if they could tell what a freshman looked like. The first bell ringed and everyone was leaving the cafeteria. I walked up to an adult asking for help of where to go. He gave me a roster sheet and i was on my way. In home room I introduce my self to a couple of people. It turns out i had more than class with two of them. Through out the day I had trouble finding my way to all my classes. The numbers were missing, which made me more confusing.

So far my day is going okay until lunch time came. I sat at the back table while by myself while every one else was in the lunch line. Finally, someone introduced their self to me. We became good friends. After lunch my day became perfect. In each class I met at least 3 people and showed them as well as the teachers my knowledge. At the end of day i was calm. I went straight home and told my family how my first day of high school went. All I could say is… “You gotta love High School!”

Bullying!!!

Bullying

Ms. Rami

I believe this film was a very helpful and serious matter. It really stood out to me because it showed what negative things people does to themselves because their being bullied. Iy also showed how difficult is to tell an adult when something is wrong because they might not solve the problem or they might night believe you. This film has taught me something and that is to respect others the way you would like to be treated. Finally, if someone you know is in trouble and their scared to step up for them.

I have no problem with LGBT people. In my middle school there was a “G” student in my class and as i seen him everyday i can tell he was hurting inside and that he was depressed. Almost everyday in school he would be called a bad name, such as “faggot.”  I could himself getting more and more depressed, and soon after he started to talk crazy and out of his head. So before anything bad happened i stepped in and told the counselor about his problems. Two weeks past and he’s back in school with a better attitude. I talked to him everyday making sure he was okay and ever since, we’ve been friends.

Lastly, this film should be shown over the country for students to look at because I think it would make a difference in this country.

Six Passages

Jamal

English 1

Ms. Rami

Six Passages

Passage- “Faster! Faster! Get on with it, you lazy swine!” (17)

Reaction: This really upset me because the Nazi soldier calls the Jews out of their name. No one should be tortured the Jews were, just because they were walking  to slow.

Passage- “The times come now… You’ve got to leave all this.”

Reaction: I felt very sorry for the Jewish people because they had to leave all their personal belongings behind. Some of the items they had to leave behind probably met a lot to them because it could have been given to them by a special relative or someone they really admired.

Passage- “A-7713…. Lie down it! On your stomach!” (55)

Reaction: This is one of the saddest part of the book, that i could not listen to! I felt very sorry for Elie because he was stroked by the whip 25 times. As he felt the pain, I could feel it. Afterwards he fainted because of the harassment. No one should be abused like this. NO ONE! That made no sense for the Nazi soldier to do this.

Passage- “Long live liberty! A curse upon Germany! A curse! A curse!” (60)

Reaction: This really stood out to me because the the Jewish man is basically stating that there is no piece where they are. he’s also stating that this is it for everyone. Everyone is going to die as a slave.

Passage- “He had the face of a sad angel.”

This was very heart breaking because an incident young boy was killed for no reason. What made it so sad is the fact that he’s very young and  unprotected.

Passage- “Don’t think, don’t stop, just run”

This was a very interesting scene in the book. Elie did many brave things. He believed in his self, to keep his paste up even though he didn’t have a lot of energy in him to run.

Reading Guide Questions Section 3 & 4

Jamal S.

10-11

Ms. Rami

English 1

Night Questions – Section 3-4

1) I think the Germans chose to hang a few prisoners in public at a time when they were murdering thousands each day in  the crematoriums because they wanted to send a message to all Jews stating that something like this will happen to them. Also, because they wanted all the Jews to fit into the crematoriums and in order to to do so they had to terminate most Jews before entering the crematoriums.

2) In the beginning of the book Elie’s relationship with his father was close but as time went on they got even closer. But at the end of the book i believe their relationship started to move apart because neither of them believed they were going to make it alive.

3) This was a significant act because Elie’s father was showing how much he loves and worship him. Also, to keep for safety.

4) Elie’s experience at Auschwitz affected his faith because while there he gave up on everything he had ever dreamed of. As the days went on he realized that him and his father had no way of survival at Auschwitz. So he wanted everything to end so he couldn’t suffer any longer.

5) A German workman throws small crumbs of bread in the middle of the wagon which causes confusion because a lot of the men were starving and they all ran towards the bread trying to put something into their stomach. His actions suggest that he likes seeing the Jews fight over things as if they were dogs. The incident suggest that the prisoners are very hungry and that they probably haven’t eaten in days.

6) In the story a Nazi soldier strikes an attack at Elie’s father, but Elie couldn’t have done anything about it. They soon start talking less.

7) On January 28, 1945 Elie was released from the concentration camp. Elie’s emotional state at this point is delighted because he never thought of surviving this genocide.

8) I think it means that he’s now a different person and this person is going to stick to him for the rest of his life.

9) At the end of the story, he really wasn’t telling anything. It was as is he wanted the reader to fill in the blanks. He’s been successful a little. Like trying to put his life back together.

10) The meaning of “Night” was to show how each night got more difficult. I would change the title to ” My Terrible Night Mare’ because it gives more meaning to the passages in the story. It gives you more ideas on what the story will be about.

Article of the Week – December 6

WHO rallied at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday and WHO“summoned” them?

The person that rallied at the steps of Lincoln Memorial on Saturday was an enormous and impassioned crowd and he person who summoned them was Glenn Beck.

WHEN did Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his “I Have a Dream” speech on the same site?

Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech 47 years earlier.

WHAT is the Tea Party?

The Tea Party is a mix of groups that have come together to have conversations.

WHY was this program “distinctly different from most Tea Party rallies”?

The program was different from most Tea Party rallies because Glenn is more of a public person, so he makes sure everyone hears or sees what’s going on between the conservators.

WHY did many attack the rally as “dishonoring the memory of Dr. King”?

Many attacked the rally as dishonoring the memory of Dr. King because many people believed that his dream has not been achieved.

WHERE was a rally held the same day to commemorate the “I Have a Dream” speech?

A rally was held on the Memorial steps.

HOW do you feel about this rally and about Mr. Beck’s message?

I feel that is rally is so people can agree with Mr. Beck’s speeches. Lastly, I feel that Mr. Beck’s speeches are very wrong and hurtful because he’s discriminating the words of Dr. King and turning them into something else.
